Fall is arriving here at South Anderson Veterinary Clinic and October is our "Getting Old is Scary" month! We want to take some time to discuss the benefits of wellness blood work on all of our pets, especially the ones that are starting to get up there in age. It can be really tempting to put off wellness blood work on our pets when they seem to be doing just fine, but just like in people, our pets can develop a variety of diseases that often happen only as our pets become seniors. Having blood work results to compare throughout their younger, healthier years we can actually track trends and catch many problems well before your pet becomes ill, requiring an urgent care or emergency visit. While most people know that our older pets are prone to diseases such as cancer, did you know that dogs can also develop diseases such as diabetes and Cushing's disease? Also, did you know that our kitties can develop kidney disease and thyroid imbalances with age? These diseases, when caught early, can be carefully maintained with a treatment plan developed with your family veterinarian, but when left untreated can result in additional complications that require emergency veterinary care and often hospitalization for your sick pet. Here at South Anderson Veterinary Clinic, we want to ensure you have the longest, healthiest life for your pets as possible so please call us to schedule a wellness visit for your furry friend so that, together, we can help keep your pet as happy as possible!
